Turning Over a New Leaf

Imagine if you could create
new tints and hints of green,
mix blues and yellows and discover
shades no-one has seen.

I tried canary feathers with
a pinch of dunnock shell.
Three bluebells and some buttercups
made me a butter-bell.

A blueberry and sunflower brought
a strange sun-berry hue.
Bilberry with banana made
a tasty mucky goo.

Most other things that I mixed up
are really best forgot.
Forget-me-not with Dandelion?
That was dande-not.

I tried a ray of sunshine with
a flash of sapphire gem,
stirred feathers from a peacock’s breast
with flakes of honeycomb.

But nothing that I made resulted
in new shades of green
and nothing that I made compares
with everything I’ve seen:

the green of leaves and lily pads,
of grasshopper and jade;
of meadow, sea and rainbow’s arc,
and moss in damp and shade.

Green is growth and gorgeousness
in every woodland scene.
The world’s a wash of beauty
in a myriad shades of green!
