Tracks in the Snow
I followed the footprints
Set out in the snow
Out of the forest
And into the glow
Of the midnight moon
Round and white
Keeping me safe
That cold winter’s night
I stooped down low
Observed the track
It led down to a cave
Now, no turning back
As I approached the dark opening
What should appear
But the shimmering silhouettes
Of nine majestic reindeer
In awe of their presence
Amazed by my find
I had failed to notice
What sat dormant behind
‘Twas a dusty old sleigh
Red, with gold trim
And an elderly gentleman
Dozing therein
He awoke from his slumber
And with no visible sign
The nine silhouettes
Moved into their line
With a pull on the reins
And a nod of his head
The reindeer and sleigh
Upped away and fled
Did I dream it all up?
How would I know?
The moonlight then danced
On those tracks…
In the snow.
Set out in the snow
Out of the forest
And into the glow
Of the midnight moon
Round and white
Keeping me safe
That cold winter’s night
I stooped down low
Observed the track
It led down to a cave
Now, no turning back
As I approached the dark opening
What should appear
But the shimmering silhouettes
Of nine majestic reindeer
In awe of their presence
Amazed by my find
I had failed to notice
What sat dormant behind
‘Twas a dusty old sleigh
Red, with gold trim
And an elderly gentleman
Dozing therein
He awoke from his slumber
And with no visible sign
The nine silhouettes
Moved into their line
With a pull on the reins
And a nod of his head
The reindeer and sleigh
Upped away and fled
Did I dream it all up?
How would I know?
The moonlight then danced
On those tracks…
In the snow.

About the Writer
Tom Owen
Tom is a barrister who likes to escape from his busy day job by writing songs and poetry for (and with) his two young boys. His poems focus on anything that can capture his boys’ imagination. So, knights, exotic animals and absurdist adventures feature heavily. It is his ambition to one day publish a book of children’s poetry.
