The Zookeeper’s Place
There’s a rhino in my wardrobe, which caught me by surprise
Searching through my fancy dress to find a quick disguise
There’s a monkey lying on my bed, which caught me by surprise
He’s filled it up with bananas and cream and custard pies
There’s a python in the bathtub, I can’t quite believe my eyes
He’s coiled up on a speedboat, I hope it won’t capsize
There’s a hippo in the kitchen, which caught me by surprise
He’s finishing off my dinner of sausage, beans and fries
There’s a flamingo in the attic, now, I can’t take much more
Though I turn to see a kangaroo bouncing at my door
There’s a koala at my cornflakes and yes, that surprised me too
You’d think I’d be more used to it…living above the zoo!

About the Writer
Tom Owen
Tom is a barrister who likes to escape from his busy day job by writing songs and poetry for (and with) his two young boys. His poems focus on anything that can capture his boys’ imagination. So, knights, exotic animals and absurdist adventures feature heavily. It is his ambition to one day publish a book of children’s poetry.
