The Winter Birds
There’s a birdbath behind our house
That Mom and I watch in the morning
Where robins, cardinals, and blackbirds
Primp and preen in the pool’s cool waters
Last night, winter's first freeze flew in
Transforming the water into solid ice
And I imagine that it has transformed
Into a skating rink for our feathered friends
Where the curious crows slip and slide
And the elegant finch turns a triple axel
All to the lovely, lazy melody provided
By a mourning dove perched on the fence
That Mom and I watch in the morning
Where robins, cardinals, and blackbirds
Primp and preen in the pool’s cool waters
Last night, winter's first freeze flew in
Transforming the water into solid ice
And I imagine that it has transformed
Into a skating rink for our feathered friends
Where the curious crows slip and slide
And the elegant finch turns a triple axel
All to the lovely, lazy melody provided
By a mourning dove perched on the fence
