The Window

For Grayson

I opened a window and in came a bird,
As feathered as feathered could be,
He sat on the sill; oh, he paused at a pillow,
Then swooped down and landed on me.

The window still open, it let in a mouse,
As furry as furry could be.
Though not at all worried, she hurried and scurried
To play with the bird there by me,

When right through the window there entered a cat,
As hungry as hungry could be.
Pursuing the mouse, he ran all through the house; he
Then circled and circled 'round me.

Up next through the window: a big shaggy dog,
As hairy as hairy could be,
Who made a quick beeline for Fred, the fat feline
Still chasing the mouse around me.

The window invited a passing young deer,
As agile as agile could be.
Her leap was quite graceful till she got a face full
Of popcorn knocked over by me.

More fauna arrived in like manner all day,
As steady as steady could be,
And now I'm supposing I should have been closing
The window--how silly of me!
