The Birds Return

How do birds know where to fly
when they return each spring?
Do they tuck tiny, tiny maps
under each beautiful wing?

Do they stop along their flight
to ask for tips on left, or right?

Do they follow a flying friend
or proudly lead the way?
Do they travel hours and hours
before they stop for the day?

Do twinkly stars whisper the route
whenever they have any doubt?

I do know with all my heart
it's always such a joy to see
the birds return each green spring
to sweetly sing in our maple tree.
