Surface Tension

Have you ever blown a bubble?
No, I’m serious, no joke.
But don’t worry, you all seem to me
A bubble blowing folk.

Now a scientist will tell you,
“We have bubbles for a reason;
Resulting from molecular-based
Water-soap cohesion.”

“And the nature of the tension
Of these hydrophiles adhere,
Surface area and volume
Always guarantee a sphere.”

“And the swirling mix of colors
Of a bubble in its flight,
Are a double-edged reflection
And refraction of the light.”

“In conclusion,” says the scientist,
“As all bubbles do conform
To this standard set of formulae
Each one is uniform.”

What that stuffy puffy scientist
I’m sure is not aware,
Is that bubbles can be so much more
Than water, soap, and air.

They are magic, they are wishes,
They are rainbows, they are fun!
They are dancing shining universes
Whirling toward the sun.

And they’re here just for a moment
Then they vanish - what mystique!
Just like us (even the scientist),
Each bubble is unique.

About the Writer

Erin Zampaglione

Erin spent 10 years as a scientist, running experiments and analyzing data in laboratories. Scientific writing can be very technical, but she always loved writing poetry for school publications, friends, and family. Now she is a full-time mom and first-time children’s writer. She hopes to approach these new roles in the same way a scientist would: by being curious and observant.
