The Dirigible Balloon

Space

Let’s write a poem about Space, she cried.
I said I’d never been.
Then just imagine all the things
that none of us have seen!

I sat and chewed my pencil -
nothing came to mind…
my thoughts were holes, as black as night,
the everlasting kind.

She walked around the classroom,
Wonderful! she praised…
her footsteps … getting closer …
5B, I’m so amazed!

I started feeling breathless,
she was nearly at my chair,
my body seemed to disconnect
and float up in the air.

One small step, she took my book…
There’s nothing here, she said.
Space …I told her, is a poem,
that’s better seen than read.
