The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

Roll Up! Roll Up!

Roll up! Roll up!
for the Allotment Extravaganza

boomed the radish-faced ringmaster:
IN-TRO-DU-CING…

A chorus line of cabbages
bonneted in green.

Two dazzling dahlia dancers
who pivot and preen.

Three greasy painted pansy clowns
juggling with a smile.

Four shiny shimmying shallots
in a rhythmic style.

Five corncobs balancing on stilts
waving to the crowd.

Six hives of singing honey bees
buzzing high and proud.

Seven tumbling tomato plants
somersault and jump.

Eight perfectly poised pompon balls
falling in a slump.

Nine leafy herb wheel carousels
ready for a turn.

Ten aerial hanging baskets
trailing Hart Tongue’s fern.

The radish-faced ringmaster sighed
looking all around.

Summer’s almost over so it’s
thyme to leave the ground.
