Rock Pool Secrets

Quietly, lace edged waves sigh
Up to the cliff’s great ledge,
Where barnacled flint and chalk
Make up the rock pool’s edge.

Like unbrushed mermaid’s tresses
Seaweed fringes all the rocks,
Hiding beneath it secrets
For us explorers to unlock.

We’ll fill bright buckets with water
bend low to peer into pools,
Reflecting the sky and our faces,
Break the mirror to capture a jewel.

Our fingers brush conical limpets,
Plunge deeper to retrieve a prize,
Ignore splayed fingers of starfish,
What lies deeper and well disguised?

When glass is tumbled slowly
Through churning waves and sand
It turns sharp shards of danger
Into the jewel in your hand.

Hold it up to catch the sun light
Marvel at its colour and size –
A perfect nugget of sea glass
Ocean’s gift and rockpool surprise.
