Riches and What to Do With Them
I have got some money.
It is big and round and beautiful.
It is shiny and brown as a fresh conker
and it has wonderful patterns on it:
on one side, soft, fluffy feathers
bound by ribbons and a crown,
on the other, the queen’s serious head
and her name, and some letters.
I am rich!
There’s a ferris wheel in town
and I really want to go on it.
I thought I couldn’t;
but now I’m rich and I can do anything.
I’ll be sad to say goodbye to my money
but I really want to go on the ferris wheel.
…
The ferris wheel man looked at my money
and laughed. ‘That’s only 2p!’ he said.
You need much more than that
to go on my ferris wheel.
I don’t understand:
my 2p is much better than all the other coins.
It’s got a nicer pattern than a 10p,
it’s not boring grey like a 20p
or wonky like a 50p
and it’s way bigger than a £1
but the ferris wheel man still laughed.
So I watched the ferris wheel go round
and imagined seeing my garden
and the school playground
from the top of it.
It was a bit disappointing
but all the time I was holding
my money in my pocket, feeling it get warmer,
and I decided to keep my money and look after it well,
since I am the only one who can see
how amazing it is.
And the best thing is,
if I keep my money,
I’ll stay rich for ever and ever!
It is big and round and beautiful.
It is shiny and brown as a fresh conker
and it has wonderful patterns on it:
on one side, soft, fluffy feathers
bound by ribbons and a crown,
on the other, the queen’s serious head
and her name, and some letters.
