Outside in
Today I stayed inside my head,
And flew to France in nextdoor’s shed.
I asked directions from some geese,
Then hired a boat and rowed to Greece.
Today I stayed inside my brain,
And stood under the warming rain
From clouds like fluffy bathroom taps
That floated in a sky of maps.
Today I stayed inside my head.
(It’s something you can do from bed.
Beneath soft waves of lapping sheets,
The sock-crabs tickling at your feet.)
Today I stayed inside my brain,
And ventured up north on a train.
Outside, imaginary me
Kept up by leaping tree-to-tree.
Today I stayed inside my head,
And dreamed of things that won’t be said,
Like Blip-bip-boo and Swip-na-hey
And Flaunt duck lemons on brave sleigh.
Today I stayed inside my brain,
Where homework isn’t such a pain,
And parents, teachers, can be struck
From all my thoughts, with any luck.
Today I stayed inside my head,
And waltzed with warthogs on warm bread,
Then built a singing tree from ice,
Which was such fun we did it twice.
Today I stayed inside my brain.
Some say that’s time down the drain.
But where else can we all explore
A world with countless open doors?
And flew to France in nextdoor’s shed.
I asked directions from some geese,
Then hired a boat and rowed to Greece.
Today I stayed inside my brain,
And stood under the warming rain
From clouds like fluffy bathroom taps
That floated in a sky of maps.
Today I stayed inside my head.
(It’s something you can do from bed.
Beneath soft waves of lapping sheets,
The sock-crabs tickling at your feet.)
Today I stayed inside my brain,
And ventured up north on a train.
Outside, imaginary me
Kept up by leaping tree-to-tree.
Today I stayed inside my head,
And dreamed of things that won’t be said,
Like Blip-bip-boo and Swip-na-hey
And Flaunt duck lemons on brave sleigh.
Today I stayed inside my brain,
Where homework isn’t such a pain,
And parents, teachers, can be struck
From all my thoughts, with any luck.
Today I stayed inside my head,
And waltzed with warthogs on warm bread,
Then built a singing tree from ice,
Which was such fun we did it twice.
Today I stayed inside my brain.
Some say that’s time down the drain.
But where else can we all explore
A world with countless open doors?
