The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

Oh, Will it Ever?

Winter paws at our house
like a muddy dog
our boots don’t mind
if the lawn is a bog
we don waterproof coats
against the rain - oh
will it ever be dry again?
The night muscles in
on each end of the day
so it’s now too short
for school AND play
we look for the sun
but it hides away
while the cold drags on
with wind and ills
and we wrap ourselves
against the chills
‘could you stay inside’
is Mum’s refrain - oh
will we ever be warm again?
And then comes a day
when we step outside
and the air feels different
the rain has dried
and there in the mud
a surprising thing
a daffodil bloom
announcing Spring!
