National Nothing Day

NO. Uh-uh. Not today. It’s National Nothing Day.

I will not do my homework. I refuse to clean my room.
I cannot wash the dishes, and I won’t pick up a broom.

No responsibilities, a day to just be me.
I need some peace and quiet, to let my dreams fly free.

I stare up at the ceiling and watch the fan go ‘round.
I think about what nothing means--that's when I hear the sound…

Mom cheers–Dad claps– “You won!” “Good job!”
(I hear it through the wall.)

“This is fun!” My sister cries.
“You sure you can’t play?!” they call.

Maybe I’ll make an exception. Game night does sound fun.
It couldn’t hurt to have a little nothing filled with fun.

I join in on my favorite game. We laugh, we snack, we play.
A kinda-sorta perfect way to spend my Nothing Day.
