My Spaceship Bed

When I get into bed at the start of the night
I pretend it’s a spaceship about to take flight!
With my copilot, TeDDi (the Tech Driver Droid),
There are numerous systems that must be deployed:
There’s the gravity blankets, the lightspeed pillow,
And the nightlight that indicates “All systems go”.
With a ZOOM, we leave Earth, and our travels begin;
TeDDi takes the first shift while I just settle in.
But I can’t quite sleep yet. There’s a minor delay
As my mind wanders back through the previous day.
All those little mistakes are an asteroid field
That will batter my ship ‘til we put up a shield.
And my fears for the future are like a black hole
That will swallow us down if we lose our control.
So we fire our thrusters and slingshot around,
Then out to the deepest dark space we are bound!
From here it’s smooth sailing, it’s peaceful at last,
And I snuggle in tight as the stars twinkle past.
I have nothing to do, I have nowhere to be,
Except here on my ship in the big galaxy.

About the Writer

Erin Zampaglione

Erin spent 10 years as a scientist, running experiments and analyzing data in laboratories. Scientific writing can be very technical, but she always loved writing poetry for school publications, friends, and family. Now she is a full-time mom and first-time children’s writer. She hopes to approach these new roles in the same way a scientist would: by being curious and observant.
