The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

My Animal Trick

If I’m feeling
A little bit small and shy
I think of the biggest
Animal I know,
Like an elephant -
Which is also very loud.
I stand up as tall as I can
And imagine that elephant
With its big feet stomping
Through a crowded room
And trumpeting its arrival;
Or a towering giraffe,
Or maybe a rhinoceros
With a big horn
On the end of its nose?
It works because
I imagine it’s me and then
I don’t feel quite so
small or shy anymore!
