Mummy!

In the Valley of The Kings.
In the dead of Egypt’s night.
I was deciphering hieroglyphics,
by my torch’s flickering light.
Behind me!
A rustle of cloth and bone!
A foot dragging on ancient stone.
Dropping my torch, I took flight.
Heart thumping in desperate fright.
Zig zagging through a forgotten maze,
my senses shattered-my mind a daze.
An empty sarcophagus meets my eyes.
I’d disturbed this place seeking a prize.
A turn to the left leads to a dead end.
The monster is just around the bend!
The creature’s caught up in the chase.
I cower covering my terrified face.
Crack open my eyes to meet my doom.
Yes! A mummy! -Escaped from his tomb.
For three millennia it had slumbered.
Now it rose because I had plundered.
Withered arm stretched towards my neck.
The face a tattered, tortured wreck.
I see this thing is about to speak!
A curse no doubt that it will wreak.
The mummy opens its shriveled jaw,
words forming from that gaping maw.
I brace to listen on shaking knees.
“Hey mister- you dropped your keys!”
