Mouser Matt
I’m Mouser Matt
and I’m the ship’s Cat.
The crew, they all know me by name.
I can go where I like and can do as I please,
I can wander the decks or can just take my ease,
for I’m Mouser Matt, the Captain’s cat.
Not one of the crew would dispute over that.
I’m Mouser Matt
and I’m the ship’s Cat.
I know every inch of the craft.
From starboard to port, from the bow to the stern,
there is nothing goes on that is not my concern,
for I’m Mouser Matt, the Captain’s Cat.
Not not one of the crew would dispute over that.
I’m Mouser Matt
and I’m the ship’s Cat,
the ocean is all that I know.
Not a paw have I set on dry land or on shore,
I have sailed with my Captain through peacetime and war.
Yes, I’m Mouser Matt, the Captain’s Cat.
Not one of the crew would dispute over that.
I’m Mouser Matt
and I’m the ship’s Cat -
the best in the Navy, for sure,
for you’ll not find a mouse and you’ll not find a rat,
though you search every cabin and store room and vat.
I’m Mouser Matt, the Magnifi-Cat!
Not even the Captain disputes over that.
and I’m the ship’s Cat.
The crew, they all know me by name.
I can go where I like and can do as I please,
I can wander the decks or can just take my ease,
for I’m Mouser Matt, the Captain’s cat.
Not one of the crew would dispute over that.

Cats were commonly kept on ships to help keep mice and rats under control. In 1975, the Royal Navy banned all pets (including cats) from ships, on grounds of health and hygiene.
