Maytime
Mayday, Mayday,
send the grey away,
weaving ribbons
round the pole,
see prancing,
Morris men,
bristling with bells,
striking sticks,
beginning frolics,
banging drums,
summoning hobby horses,
chasing green men,
down country lanes,
off to crown
the Queen of May,
then Banquets and bonfires,
doing Dolling and cheese rolling,
we’ll be bringing in the May,
Singing it’s time to
celebrate for
fertility’s returned,
cast off your coats
spring is here,
cheer for new growth.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Gather the greenery,
parade your finest flowers,
in the merry month of May
give us a kiss,
hailing hey
nonny nonny,
Maytime is playtime
and time for pleasure,
whatever the weather
wey hey!
send the grey away,
weaving ribbons
round the pole,
see prancing,
Morris men,
bristling with bells,
striking sticks,
beginning frolics,
banging drums,
summoning hobby horses,
chasing green men,
down country lanes,
off to crown
the Queen of May,
then Banquets and bonfires,
doing Dolling and cheese rolling,
we’ll be bringing in the May,
Singing it’s time to
celebrate for
fertility’s returned,
cast off your coats
spring is here,
cheer for new growth.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Gather the greenery,
parade your finest flowers,
in the merry month of May
give us a kiss,
hailing hey
nonny nonny,
Maytime is playtime
and time for pleasure,
whatever the weather
wey hey!
