Lights Out!

From the kitchen, Mum calls
‘Lights out in ten!’
‘But Mum, I won’t finish
my book by then!’

‘Well,’ Mum sighs, ‘it’s now
Eight and a quarter!’
‘But Mum, I need
A glass of water!’

‘Here’s your water,
Now, lights out in six!’
‘But I just remembered
There’s Lego to fix!’

‘Time’s up! LIghts out!
I’m serious, son!’
‘Another story?
Please. Just one?’

‘Just five minutes more
To run to the loo?’
‘Hmmm!’ Mum huffs
‘I’ll give you two!’

‘Why can I hear footsteps
Along the hall?’
I hear my exhausted,
And fed-up mum call’

‘I just remembered
To brush my teeth.’
I call to my mum
In the room beneath.

‘It’s now been an hour
Since Lights Out !’ Mum said.
So, my tired mum went
To bed, instead.
