Jumping Beans
Way down in Mexico
On a rocky desert hub,
You’ll find us hanging out
On a Pavoniana shrub.
We’re invaded by an insect,
A certain kind of moth,
Who wriggles in and lays her eggs
In the seeds inside our pods.
When the larvae start to hatch
The wriggling pods fall down.
Our seeds turn into jumping beans
Bouncing on the ground.

Val lives near Farnham with a horse and husband and several grandchildren living nearby, who like to mark her poems out of ten. She used to write for adults, but decided she much preferred writing poetry for children, after her debut poem was published online with The Dirigible Balloon in 2021.
