The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

Is it Really a Moon?

Some see the moon as many things.
In fact, I’ll think of some. A cosmic plug
upon a string, a sluggish pendulum?
A yo-yo in slow motion, great!
A planetary friend? Or maybe it’s a
spinning plate. I cannot comprehend?
And is it like a pinball too, that’s striking
all it sees? Or maybe it’s a spot of glue,
a whitened hive of bees? A pupil in the eye
of night, a press stud never popped? An orb
of thought, that’s lost in sight, a coin that
someone dropped? A landing spot for aliens,
the bottom of a well? Or just a white geranium,
a gong, or silenced bell? A star that’s got an ego
trip, a cog that’s often stuck? Or just an opalescent
pip, a distant hockey puck? For now, I’m out
of things to say; although it’s been quite fun.
I’ll come around again some day
with rhymes about the sun!
