The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

Hibernation

She felt it
in her bones
first.
A deep
and biting
chill.
A shift
in the air.
Heard
the wind
in new notes.
It’s time,
she thought,
as the ground
crackled,
and the world
steeled itself
for a freeze.
Burrowed
deep
inside a pile
of leaves,
curled
into a ball
and slept.
