Dandelion Wishes

Dandelions have many names
Priest’s Crown, Swine Snout, and Irish Daisy
They’re not very easy things to tame
Wild to their core

They turn from yellow to whitish gray
The breeze carrying their seeds away
But if you’re lucky, you might one day
Find a few on the grassy floor

And if you get a perfect fluff
With every soft and silky tuft
You can wish for all sorts of stuff
Imagining what’s in store

My dandelion wish is for
A million mommy kisses more
Ice cream, sun and friends galore
One wish has turned to four!

I wish that I could go to space,
And win our family egg drop race,
Then find a secret hiding place
Where I’d never have a chore

But if I come upon another,
I’ll give it to my little brother
And tell him, ‘Careful not to smother,
Its magic holds a door

For when you blow the seeds away,
They float on through the light of day
To land in a very far off place
Where your wish is heard once more’

About the Writer

Rachel Lynn Ellicott

Rachel Lynn Ellicott grew up in the idyllic Hudson Valley, New York, finding inspiration in its rolling hills and cozy antique shops. After graduating from Cornell University, she became a Theatre Agent at Paradigm Talent Agency in New York City. In her spare time, you can find her writing children's poems, composing piano music, and drinking tea. Possibly too much tea. Definitely too much tea. For Rachel, the best stories are the ones you tell together (preferably over dessert).
