Poetry for Children

Christmas Present

It starts with a peep that’s bound to excite,
It grows to a feeling, of utter delight -
Tingles of joy and some butterfly nerves,
My Christmas present is all angles and curves.

It’s knobbly, bobbly, yet strangely smooth,
When I looked closely, I thought that it moved!
It’s lumpy, bumpy, squidgy and squashy,
And ever so slightly smells like warm toffee.

There it sits wrapped in whispering tissue
I want to rip open, but this is the issue.
Its ribbons are fluttering like flags in a breeze,
But I’m fairly sure the contents just sneezed!

It’s a mystery, a conundrum a puzzle for sure
As it seems to be floating just off the floor.
How can it seem as light as a feather,
When mum and dad had to lift it together?

What’s in the parcel, please don’t make me wait,
(all this impatience is not my best trait!)
At last, it is open – and with saucer-like eyes
I thank Father Christmas – It’s SUCH a surprise!
