The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

Bright Christmas

Backdrop scenes of snow, so white
And twinkling bulbs in broad daylight
Ironic jumpers in the shops
Worn for fifteen minutes, tops
And peeled off in the sticky heat
Swapped for T-shirts, shorts, barefeet

The summer sun is out in force
As Dad prepares the grand main course
Of turkey, roasties, all the trimmings
We’d much rather be out swimming
At the beach or in the pool
Anything to clutch some cool

Instead we have to be content
With winter customs, borrowed, lent
From countries half a world away
But on this merry, special day
We play pretend with spray-on snow
Happy to go with the flow
For after lunch it’s straight outside
To bask in summertime Yuletide
