Big Dreams
My teacher said we have to use our imagination.
She said "I want you to write
The best story, with the title,
“What I will be when I'm older",
But I'm stuck.
I tried thinking of kites, bubbles and balloons
Not fights, troubles and typhoons,
Then a flight to Hubble with baboons,
But long division, verbs, spellings homework snuck into my mind.
"Dream big" she said, "There are no limits."
The only dreams I remember are scary ones.
I don't want Big Dreams if they're like that.
At first I thought I'll just be older,
Bigger, boring, with a car and lots of bills to pay.
Then I thought of nice things, like
What I'd love Santa to bring this year
A puppy, a horse, or even a rhinoceros
And,
And,
A dragon, Or maybe even all four!
I'd keep them in the garage in between
Taking them on adventures to planets
And new galaxies I will discover
Mum never puts her car in there anyway
And if I promised to tidy it I know she'd let me.
I just have to hope they won't fight
But I'll talk to all of them when they arrive
Explain the ground rules
And I'm sure they'll behave.
I'll feed them candy floss and pizza and ice cream.
At the weekend we'll have a movie night
With popcorn and crisps.
I might even move into the garage
And I’ll take them on long walks at the beach.
But now I have to write this story
And all of a sudden it doesn't seem quite so hard, because
I know what I’ll be when I’m older,
I want to work with animals
I'll help everything from termites, gerbils and raccoons
When I’m the intergalactic dragon vet.
