Big Blue Beach Brolly

We had a big beach brolly, bought in a seaside arcade
Below it when showers turned squally, we’d watch raindrops cascade.
Finding shore creepy crawlies, into rockpools we’d wade
Never melancholy! Saving crabs, our crusade.
Under our blue beach brolly, we sheltered in the shade
After games of beach volley in climbing centigrade.
While slurping an iced lolly my big sister Sinead
Built a castle and folly with my red bucket and spade.
My sister perfect Polly, from behind her cool sunshades
Played with the tiny brolly swimming in her lemonade.
While our ‘make-believe-Molly’ (today a princess mermaid!)
Picnicked with her dolly on bread and marmalade.
Then a gust blew our brolly, like a kite, it soared and swayed
I grabbed Jack, our collie, held on tight, not afraid.
Up, we rose, laughed, “how jolly!” over the sandy esplanade.
Polly shouted, ‘What folly!” threw a rope up to our aid.
“Let go and jump now, you wally!” Ollie shouted a tirade.
I gripped the blue beach brolly as he watched below, dismayed.
Then brave brother Ollie, every course rule disobeyed
Jumped on a golf trolley while golfers pitched and played.
“Come back Jack and Holly!” he shouted, to persuade
Me to jump, “Let go of the brolly!” while collie Jack barked and bayed.
We soared near the sea, “Golly!” It couldn’t be delayed!
I let go our beach brolly, held Jack tight, jumped and prayed.
“Can you hear me, Holly?” Whispers. Comments were made.
I dreamt of Jack, our collie, was sure that Ollie hoorayed!
I looked at Dr McAuley while Jack and I were X-rayed
Her writing, very scrawly, said ‘Rest!’ and we obeyed.

Under a new beach brolly sat Polly and Sinead
Along with Ollie and Molly and that’s where Jack and I stayed.
