The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

Bedtime

Fishing boats line up on shore -
They’ve done so many times before -
Weathered by the sea and sand,
Calmly resting on the land.

Nets are drying, oars are still,
The evening sunshine starts to spill
Over the sides of paint-cracked hulls
That sigh beneath the circling gulls.

Gentle ripples stroke their sterns
As evening sets the tide to turn,
And, in the glow of harbour lights,
They close their eyes and say goodnight.
