The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

An Alien Said:

I don’t know hot, and I don’t know cold.
I don’t know young, and I don’t know old.

I don’t know rain. I don’t know snow.
There are lots of things that I don’t know.

I don’t know sweet, and I don’t know sour.
I don’t know seconds, minutes, an hour.

I don’t know good, and I don’t know bad.
I don’t know happy. I don’t know sad.

They are not my knows, though they might be yours,
but that doesn’t mean I’m a creature of flaws.

I know the moon and I know the stars,
and I know the planets like Venus and Mars.

I know space like the back of my hand.
I know all the very best places to land.

I can fly faster than a flash of light.
I can see in the dead of night.

I visit the stars like you visit a friend
just up the road, or around the bend.

I don’t know you, and you don’t know me.
We’re aliens to each other but, don’t you see?

You could show me, and I could show you
all the different things we, each, can do.

We could learn a lot if we take the time
to listen and share how our differences chime.
