The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

A Walk Through Winter

Coats
buttoned
top to bottom.
Boots laced for
twig-snapping, woodland
stomping.

Where frost
has stitched its silvery threads;
garlanding the way
with pearly white,
ice bright,
light.

Berries
festoon hedgerows
with glittery baubles:
ice-sprinkled,
scarlet,
twinkles.

The frozen
snap and crack of ice
on a puddle.
The surface splinters
as boots plunge
deep into
winter.

We shiver
beneath twilight sliver.
A deepening hue seeping
into silent night sky;
a silver moon,
star steeped,
dipped in ink.

And now,
home.
Cradling hot cocoa
beside fireside glows,
thawing out
ice-rink
toes.
