A Picnic Basket for a Happy Day

Today is a perfect fall day –
not too warm,
not too chilly.
I drag the picnic basket out of the garage.

I carefully place inside
all the ingredients for a happy day –

appreciation of nature’s gifts,
tolerance for insects and annoyances,
laughter as round and bright as sunshine,
a bundle of
love,
play,
wonder,
and fun.

When we head home,
the basket will be empty
except for memories we’ll unpack
in the dark cold of wintertime.

Theresa Gaughan

Theresa is a third-grade teacher living in Knoxville, Tennessee. She is an avid reader and has a very extensive collection of children's books.
